Loma Media: Storytelling and Startups

“Advertising is fundamentally persuasion and persuasion happens to be not a science, but an art.” -Bill Bernbach.

San Diego ROC member Loma Media is a marketing group that takes ad-master Bernbach’s punchy wisdom to heart. The self-described “storytellers” behind LM have developed creative video content and brand marketing strategies for Google, EA Sports, Qualcomm, DirecTV, AAA, and most recently, Startup Grind. In fact, Loma Media will be streaming Startup Grind’s upcoming Global Conference on February 21st-22nd.

CEO’s, investors, and developers from Khosla Ventures, WAZE, Tinder, Coursera, and a bunch of other successful companies will come together to talk about things that, if you’re in the business, should probably interest you. It’s going to be an awesome opportunity to meet and rub shoulders with smart people. However, if you don’t hold a ticket to the event or can’t make it up to Silicon Valley this week, you can still stream it live through YouTube.

When we found out that one of our members was hosting an event for startup’s, we were interested. So we turned coincidence into opportunity and had a quick chat with the folks at Loma Media about their company, developing good brand content, and Startup Grind’s Global Conference.

You can read the exchange below.

I love the fun facts about LM that you post up on the website. Got any more?

Lisa, our VP of Production, co-wrote and directed the “tween” thriller Sarah Landon and the Paranormal Hour, which was released in 1100 theaters across the United States prior to a worldwide Sony DVD release. She also co-wrote and directed the music video “National High Five Day,” a charitable cause that’s earned kudos from USA Today to the White House. (National High Five Day is the third Thursday in April for those of you didn’t know. Those of you who do—High Five!)

Angie, our VP of Account Management has been on Judge Judy! Nothing cooler than that!

2. You are live streaming Startup Grind’s Global Conference. Whether we’re attending or watching from our offices, what can we expect?

This year, with 5,000 founders and investors, more than 40 keynote and fireside sessions, and over 50 exhibiting startups, this is Startup Grind’s largest event ever!

On the 21st we’ll go LIVE in Redwood City for Startup Grind 2017! Tune in for behind-the-scenes stories, genius words of wisdom, and a big dose of inspiration from some of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs. Stars of the show have included the founders of Facebook, Lyft, YouTube, 23andMe, Instagram, AOL, AirBnB, and Venture Capitalist Megastars like Marc Andreessen and Vinod Khosla.

Join Loma Media’s livestream February 21st and 22nd, 9am-6pm at youtube.com/startupgrind.

3. Any quick tips for developing good brand content?

Imagine your intended audience is someone you’ve asked to coffee. You could guess at what kind of coffee they want (and if they’d like to add a bagel or a croissant), but isn’t it easier to just ask them?  Don’t forget that two-way communication is a natural part of our everyday lives. So, instead of simply falling in love with your idea for a video or other branded content, ask the questions (and do the research) that tells you what will resonate with the target. Then you’re equipped to really connect with the people you’re trying to reach–and you’ve lowered the barrier of cutting through all the noise to earn attention that leads to action.

4. Finally, could you say a few words about your experience working from ROC?

We enjoy the collaborative and creative atmosphere of ROC. Great energy, fun events, friendly and helpful staff. The overall vibe of the entire floor is very engaging for us and our clients.

Be sure to check out Loma Media’s live stream of the Startup Grind Global Conference on Youtube!
