In the contemporary workplace, the concept of the ideal “work/life balance” looms large. Employees are seeking jobs that allow them to set their own schedules, and employers are always looking for new ways to bring fun and wellness to the workplace.
The recent Joy on Demand event at the Santa Monica Real Office Centers location sought to help individuals find that balance, and manage everyday stress.
“Created by the Search Inside Yourself Leadership Institute (SIYLI), Joy On Demand is based on the latest New York Times best-selling creation from Google’s “Jolly Good Fellow” and author Chade-Meng Tan,” says Ilana Robbins Gross, public programs coordinator for SIYLI. “It combines the latest neuroscience of how the mind works with mindfulness-based training, showing how joy and well-being are habits that can be trained. What we think, do, and pay attention to changes the structure and function of our brains – Joy On Demand helps us put this mechanism to good work.”
The SIYLI partnered author Chade-Meng Tan to design a one-day course that does not just teach the books’ core concepts, but also uses interactive experiences to apply them to everyday life.
“Participants will learn how an uplifted mind creates the conditions for better collaboration, creativity, flexibility, health, courage, and resilience,” Gross says. “The approach is practical, based in science, and designed for an audience interested in the topic of happiness but skeptical of typical pop-psychology approaches. Participants leave with a set of tools for creating more happiness in their work and personal life, and skills to work with difficult emotions.”
When asked who would benefit the most from this type of course, Gross says that the lessons can be applied to virtually any person’s life.
“This course is relevant for people at all stages of their life and careers who would like a fun and no-nonsense intensive in how to be happier, sustain well-being at work, have greater ease in relationships both personal and professional, be more creative and resilient, and not just manage stress, but transform it.”
